Characterization of Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Proteins in Renal Diseases

Abstract
Insulin-like growth factors, IGF-I and IGF-II, are protein that promote cellular growth and differnetiation of various organs including the kidney. Each peptide interacts with high-affinity receptors an also has high affinity for a family of
insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs). Altered serum IGFBP patterns in acute and chronic renal failure have been described. In this study, We have evaluated serum IGFBP profiles in various renal disease (n=22), by using western
ligand
blot. Nephrotic syndrome and renal failure patients showed decreased intact serum IGFBP 3 and increased serum IGFBP-2. Low molecular weight from of IGFBP-3 was found only in chronic renal failure but not in nephrotic syndrome.
To evaluate altered IGFBP profilos, We performed IGFBP-3 protease assay with sera from renal diseases. Control serum and sera from all renal diseases did not showed protease activity. Although the exact role of alteration of serum IGFBPs pattern
was not
established, this alteration may play a rol in the modulation of IGFs action on kidney.
